Project description

After we finished the TomTom Carminat project we did a pitch to design the complete head-unit for the next version of the system.

In this version way more car features would become accessible, and controlled through the head-unit of the car; such as:

  • Fuel consumption metrics
  • Ventilation
  • Car diagnostics
  • Phone
  • etc.

We knew we had little chance, as this is of course very close to their own brand and experience, and in the end we did not win but it was still a great experience!

My role in this project

I was the Lead UX Designer on this project and mostly worked with a Visual Designer on TomTom side, and a specification manager on the client side.

We had an amazing time brainstorming within the given limitations in some areas, but complete blue skies in other areas.

We were at the fore-front of thinking about solutions for electric cars, such as mitigating range-anxiety, regenerative braking etc. and planning your recharging stops etc.

And for ICE-cars, how we could gamify fuel consumption in order to get higher mileage.

Lessons learned

  • A lot of blue sky brainstorming
  • Deep diving into future trends of (electric) driving
  • More system-thinking
